Julie Barwick (b. 1983), is a composer and pianist originally from Southern California and now based in San Francisco. Drawing inspiration from her classical and jazz background, she not only enjoys writing for traditional chamber music ensembles, but also non-traditional ensembles as well as experimental jazz groups. She has written for ensembles with such diversity as Sqwonk, Cecilia String Quartet, CityWinds, Ignition Duo, Siroko Duo, Andronica Trio, The Holly Martins, and Bleeding Vector.
Julie will be Elevate Ensemble’s 2017-18 Composer-in-Residence, and will be writing two new pieces for Elevate this season. Her music has been performed throughout the Bay Area and US, and was recently selected to be on the Verdant Vibes Benefit Concert in Rhode Island in February 2017. As a winner of the 2016 Areon International Composition Competition, she was commissioned to write her piece, Personal Space, for Areon Flutes, a premier flute performance and teaching ensemble also based in the Bay Area. Hot Air Music Festival commissioned her piece, Let Go, to be presented on a panel and workshop at the 2015 New Music Gathering held in San Francisco. She has also composed music for harp and string quartet to accompany two films by early filmmaker, Georges Méliès, and which was premiered at the Balboa Theatre in San Francisco, along with music by four other Bay Area composers. Other recent projects include commissions from Siroko Duo, Jill Morgan Brenner, Andronica Trio, and Ignition Duo through the Guerrilla Composers Guild. She is currently working on a commission for the San Francisco Guitar Quartet.
As a co-founder of Helia Music Collective along with composer Emma Logan, she believes strongly in supporting the creative endeavors of women in music throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Helia Music Collective recently held their first concert of all living women composers featuring the flute ensemble, Siroko Duo. They are currently planning their next concert and collaboration for spring 2018.
She received her Bachelor of Arts in Music with highest honors from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2005 and has studied with composers Belinda Reynolds, Dan Becker, David Garner, Cindy Cox, and Henry Threadgill. She has also studied piano with Michael Seth Orland, Deno Gianopoulos, and Robert Schwartz. Upon graduation from UC Berkeley, she studied piano with Adam Wibrowski at the Conservatoire Hector Berlioz in Paris. She received her Master of Music in composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Julie is also passionate about teaching piano to students of all ages and maintains a full teaching studio in San Francisco. She is a member of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) and MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) where she has also served on the board of directors and been the Certificate of Merit Program Chair.
